Instructions
Preheat oven to 375°F
In a large mixing bowl, using a hand-held mixer or a stand mixer, beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Add the vanilla extra, egg and milk.
Mix again until well combined.
In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt.
Add the dry ingredients slowly to the wet ingredients mixing well between each addition.
Once the dough comes together, remove it from the bowl and wrap in parchment paper.
Chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 to 60 minutes.
Remove from the refrigerator and roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface about ¼ - ½ inch thickness.
Using a circle cookie cutter, cut out the shapes.
Place the cookies onto a cookie sheet that's been lined with parchment paper.
Bake in the preheated 375°F oven for 8 - 10 minutes or until they begin to turn golden brown on the bottom.
Allow the cookies to cool completely while you prepare the cookie glaze.
Decorating the Cookies
Stir together powdered sugar and milk in a small bowl until smooth.
Beat in corn syrup and vanilla extract until icing is smooth and glossy.
If icing is too thick, add more corn syrup.
Spread the icing on the cookies using an offset spatula.
Immediately decorate with the red and blue candy pieces into the shape of the American flag.
Notes
If you want, you could pipe the glaze on top of the cookies.
