Since moving to Pennsylvania there have been a few changes I needed to adjust to, like Friday night football games. I was born and raised in Queens, NY...we didn't have a football team at our high school. I had no idea how important Friday night football was until moving here...the whole town turns out for a game. I've been to a few and to be honest with you, it's just sometimes too cold to sit on a hard metal bench for hours on end waiting for your team to win.
The other thing is the Monday after Thanksgiving...the schools are closed for...(get ready)...the first day of hunting. Can you believe that? It's like a religion out here. The schools are not closed for Veteran's Day because they have off for the first day of hunting.
When I first found out about this day off instead of Veteran's Day, I was quite confused. There is something not quite right about forgoing remembering all the men and women who sacrificed their lives for this country in order for fathers to take their sons hunting on opening day.
I've had to explain this "day off" quite a few times in the past years and know I'm not alone in thinking, "WHAT?" Have we come this far in our society that we ignore a day to reflect on the sacrifices so many people have made for our country just so school age children can go hunting? I mean, if it's that important, just keep your kids out of school on the first day of hunting and let's go back to remembering Veteran's Day!
And to all you hunters out there reading my blog, I have nothing against hunting...just think our priorities are little messed up here.

I can understand you reaction. I agree with you about Veterans Day.
I grew up in central Illinois and I have to give a shout out to my high school football team who, last Friday WON the STATE CHAMPIONSHIP for their division!! Go Trojans!!!
Yeah, football is a major thing in a lot of states. It is a huge community event.

Yeah, it's big around here too. Our high school in Queens didn't have stuff like that..but we had gang day or walk out day....remember when we all walked out of school? Ahhh, those were the days......HA!

Perspective is so funny. When I first met Steve and he confessed he'd never been to a high school football game, I thought he was so deprived! And it was strange for me, coming from the Pacific Northwest, to find out people actually take the day off to celebrate Jewish holidays. Love your blog!

Changing school is really a problem. When we were choosing the new house, we spent hours sitting on Fizber and investigating the right place. And now we are very glad that we've chosen the house with the greater number of businesses nearby.

Wow! I had no idea! My hubby is a veteran and a hunter, and he'll be shocked when I tell him this. There simply is no reasonable justification for this kind of thing, is there?
Hope your day is splendiferous!!

I had the same observations when I went to college in Pennsylvania. My roommate took me to my first High School Football game when I was a freshman or sophmore in college... it was unbelievable how riled up people were over the game. Seems so different from my high school experience. We were not encouraged to get involved in after school activities because the school was in such a bad area. Not to mention having to walk through metal detectors every day. It was a great eye opener in some regards living in PA. Loved my first trip to the "Farm Show" in Harrisburg. Never knew there were so many different types of animals.
