Recently a 98 year-old lady named Irena died.
During WWII, Irena, received permission to work in the Warsaw Ghetto.
She worked as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist.
She had an 'ulterior motive.'
Being German, she KNEW what the Nazi's plans were for the Jews.
But Irena had a plan of her own.
She smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried into work.
She placed her tool box in the back of her truck.
She used a burlap sack for larger kids.
She also had a dog in the back of the truck that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto.
The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.
During her time of doing this, she managed to
smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants.
She was caught, and the Nazi's broke both her legs, arms and beat her severely.
Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard.
After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived
and reunite the family.
Most had been gassed.
The kids she helped were placed in foster family homes or adopted.
Last year Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize.
She was not selected.
Al Gore won, for a slide show on Global Warming.
The prize doesn't always go to the most deserving.
Think about what you do today, you could change the life of someone.
Maybe we're all not an 'Irena.'
But we can all tell someone about the saving grace of Jesus
and save them from an eternity of hell.
Think about it.
ETERNITY.
Think about the people you come in contact with every day.
I know I am.

Thank you so much for sharing this. As a grandchild of a large, mixed faith family (my grandmother is Jewish) I think it's important to be aware of history (in religion and in the world) in all it's aspects. I encourage my kids to be aware of the Holocaust as well... and this act of bravery is so very important to remember; I looked it up even further and invited the kids over to read about Irena on your page and other resources. Found that the awarded her with the Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian award posthumously, and she is well-remembered. I'm glad. Thanks again for showing this to us.

Wow! I had never heard about her.
I'll definitely send people to read this wonderful post.
It really encouraged me in my work at the Pregnancy Care Center! Without these small centers (3000 across the nation) women wouldn't have options when facing a crisis pregnancy.
Without accurate information about abortion procedures, community referrals, practical assistance, emotional support and the option of adoption, millions of women feel they have only one choice.
As believers, we can all pray, give and serve to protect lives in our town, state and country.
Thank you for reminding me how important it is to SAVE a life!

The Nobel prizes are highly coveted, but hardly fair. In fact, orginally, due to jealousy, Alfred Nobel did not have a prize for mathematics. So it's been pretty tainted from the get-go. This lovely woman deserved that Peace Prize. I am sure that Israel honored her with Righteous Among the Nations, though...it's a big prize there...she got some other recognition, too, some big stuff...the Audrey Hepburn award and such...gosh, just one person and what a difference she made.
