Today I am sharing with you a kitchen tool that everyone should own...a microplane grater. I've had mine for a few years now and it's great. This kitchen tool is perfect for zesting citrus, grating garlic or hard cheeses...even for grating spices or chocolate!

For hard cheeses such as Parmesan, you'll get a nice, light fluffy pile of cheese as opposed to the grittier result from a traditional box grater. This is because the microplane actually produces tiny, thin strips as opposed to the hard granules you get from using a box grater.
You can use the microplane grater on hard spices such as nutmeg to grate quickly and easily, and it's so easy to grate lemons or oranges into just the right amount of zest for any recipe. With wetter foods like zest, you will have to slide the resulting product from the backside of the plane as it does tend to stick, but this only takes a quick flick of your finger.
It's also perfect to use for grating chocolate!
I love being able to use the grater right over the bowl or pot that I'm preparing food in as it's
long enough to rest on the lip of most bowls.
If you don't have one, I highly suggest you put a microplane grater on your shopping list soon!
