Psalms 1:3

“And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water,

that bringeth forth his fruit in his season;

his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”

Psalms 1:3

As Christians we are to be “like a tree planted by the rivers of water.”

Not just a river, but many rivers...the rivers of forgiveness,

the rivers of grace, and more importantly,

the rivers of communion with Christ which are never-ending

sources of supply that will help bring forth our fruit in season.

These rivers have a rich water supply that will help us produce a

beautiful tree filled to an over abundance of fruit.

There are many types of fruit that we as Christians can have growing on our trees...

the fruit of patience in the time of suffering,

the fruit of faith when we are going through trials

and the fruit of joy when we are being blessed.

The every day trials that we go through should bring forth abundant fruit growing on our trees.

But how can our fruit grow if we do not spend time drinking from

the “rivers of water” that only the Lord can supply?

“His leaf also shall not wither.”

There is a vital connection between the root and the leaf of a tree.

Dry roots soon bring the dry rot into the leaf.

Just like many of us can’t see the roots of a tree,

the roots of our Christian character are also not seen.

BUT we can see the leaf...the fruit...the hidden condition of

our roots can be judged by the outward appearance of our fruit.

Withered leaves are signs of withered life.

The outward life will be fresh and green when the inward life is pure and full.

We can’t blame the “river” for this “river” never runs dry;

we only have ourselves to blame when our leaves begin to wither.

So how can our trees properly grow and have leaves full of fruit?

We need to spend time praying and seeking God.

When we don’t do these things with our Lord we will become

like the tree that is planted far away from any source of water...

we will starve and never grow properly.

Let’s together realize that we can be the tree the Psalmist writes about...

full of rich green leaves and fruit as long as our inward life is pure and full...

drinking from the rivers supplied by our Lord.
