What is Cheese Danish filling made of?
For this recipe, I used softened cream cheese mixed with sugar and a little lemon extract for flavor. Traditionally, Cheese Danish filling is typically made from a combination of cream cheese, eggs, and milk.
The cream cheese provides a rich and tangy flavor, while the eggs help to bind the filling together. Milk is often added to thin out the mixture and make it easier to spread. Other ingredients, such as sugar, vanilla extract, and lemon juice, may also be used to flavor the filling.
I take a huge shortcut with this recipe and use refrigerator crescent roll dough. Although you can also use a homemade pastry dough or puff pastry to spoon the cheese mixture filling in before baking until golden brown.
Some Cheese Danish recipes use a filling made using cottage cheese or ricotta cheese in place of cream cheese. However, these types of cheese tend to be less flavorful and may not provide as smooth of a texture.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1 | Prepare the Crescent Rolls
- Open the crescent roll dough but keep it in the log form.
- Slice the dough into 8 to 10 equal pieces.
- Place them on a parchment lined baking sheet.
- Using a tart tamper tool, gently press to create an indent in each for the cream cheese filling.
Step 2 | Prepare the Cream Cheese Filling
- Make sure the cream cheese is soft before even beginning this step.
- You can remove it from the refrigerator an hour before you're planning on making this recipe.
- Using an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese, sugar and lemon extract together until smooth.
- Add about a tablespoon to the center of each crescent roll circle.
Step 3 | Brush with Egg Wash
- Brush the crescent roll "rim" with a beaten egg white. This will give the danish a shine.
- I like to also sprinkle the danish with a little extra granulated sugar.
Step 4 | Baking Instructions
- Bake for 10 minutes in a preheated 350°F oven or until the edges are golden brown.
- Allow the danish to cool before drizzling with the powdered sugar glaze.

Recipe Variations
- You can use any pie filling flavor you like. Cherry or lemon would be great too.
- If you want, you can try vanilla or lemon extract instead of the almond extract.
- Slivered almonds or chopped pecans sprinkled on top of the glaze would make a great topping and add a little fun crunch to the sweetened cream cheese flavor.
Storage Tips
- Any leftovers should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
- They will remain fresh like this for about a day.
- However, as with most crescent roll recipes, they are best eaten fresh.
