How to Melt Chocolate
- Begin by placing the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl and place the bowl in the microwave using the low setting and starting out in 30 seconds intervals.
- Remove the bowl from the microwave and stir the chocolate. One of the biggest mistakes people make with using the microwave is, they forget to stir the chocolate after each interval. Chocolate pieces can retain their shape until you stir them.
- If you don't stir, you risk burning the chocolate.
- Return the chocolate back to the microwave and repeat with another 10 to 15 seconds until the chocolate is completely melted.
- In just a few minutes you'll have perfectly beautiful melted chocolate for dipping.

Main Ingredients Needed
Here's a quick overview of the ingredients for this recipe. Find the exact amounts and click the Instacart button to easily add them to your cart – all in the printable recipe card below!
- Rice Krispy Cereal
- Mini Marshmallows - these melt faster than full sized marshmallows.
- Butter
- Milk Chocolate Morsels - or you could use candy melts.
- Chocolate Covered Pretzel Twists - for this recipe I used Flipz brand.
- Red Candies - M&M's or Skittles work best.
- Candy Eyes
The Rice Krispie mixture is very sticky! Try to wet your hands slightly while pressing the mixture into the pan. That should help spread everything easily and not get your hands too sticky.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1 | Prepare the Rice Krispie Treats
- Prepare a 9X13 baking pan by lining the bottom with a piece of parchment paper or waxed paper. Spray a little non-stick cooking spray on the bottom to get the parchment paper to stick.
- Melt the butter in a large saucepan over low heat.
- As soon as the butter is melted, add the marshmallows and stir constantly until the marshmallows have melted.
- Remove the saucepan from heat and add the cereal.
- Stir until the cereal is coated in the marshmallows.
- Using a buttered spatula, add the cereal mixture to the prepared pan.
Step 2 | Decorate
- Melt the chocolate chips in the microwave. Follow the directions listed above making sure you don't overheat them. If the melted chocolate is too thick, you can add a teaspon or two of vegetable shortening to thin it out. Do not add water.
- Spread the melted chocolate over ⅔ of the Rice Krispie Treat.
- Add the candy eyes, red candy nose and pretzel ears.
- Allow the Reindeer Treats to dry completely before serving.

Recipe Variations
- Packaged Rice Krispie Treats- you can make this recipe even easier by using a store-bought package of Rice Krispie Treats
- Make them as Cake Pops - add a popsicle stick and turn these treats into Reindeer Treat on a Stick.
- Christmas Tree Shapes - use a Christmas tree cookie cutter and decorate them with different colored M&Ms for ornaments.
Storage Tips
- Store the reindeer treats recipe in an air-tight container.
- Layer them between sheets of parchment paper.
- Flash freeze them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. After 30 minutes store them either in a plastic bag or air-tight container.
- Rice Krispie treats will last in the freezer for up to six months but the rice cereal can change texture if they're kept in the freezer for too long.
Top Recipe Tip
- Make sure you decorate each Reindeer Treats Recipe separately.
- If the chocolate dries, the decorations will not stick.
- You can easily use a little melted chocolate on the back of the candies or pretzels to act as glue if you are having problems getting them to stick.
