📌Quick Tip: If you are going to use food coloring to dye cake layers or frosting, opt for Gel Food Coloring. The concentrated gel-based formula gives your buttercream, royal icing or cake batter a beautiful hue without thinning it out like traditional food coloring.
👩🍳Recipe Notes
- Try baking a vanilla cake mix using a bundt cake pan. Drizzle the cake with melted white chocolate or cream cheese frosting down the sides. Then top the bundt cake with red, white and blue sprinkles or fresh berries. Check out my Red Velvet 4th of July Cake.
- Instead of a traditional bundt cake pan, try mini bundt cakes! They're a little bigger than cupcakes and look great on a dessert table. Check out my Patriotic Bundt Cake Recipe.
- Try creating a red, white and blue cake by dividing a cake mix recipe and adding red and blue food coloring to two portions and keeping the third portion plain. Bake the cakes separately and then stack them once cooled. Don't forget to frost with my homemade cream cheese recipe.
🌟4th of July 4th Desserts that won't Melt
Although this post is specifically about cakes, you want to make sure you choose an easy dessert recipe that won't melt! Here are a few tips:
- Look for desserts that can be stored at room temperature without melting or spoiling, such as cookies, brownies, or cupcakes. My mini patriotic bundt cake recipe would be great!
- Try not to use ingredients that will melt in the heat like fresh whipped cream, chocolate or even ice cream. Decorate with fresh berries or sprinkles.
- Try to set your dessert table up indoors or in a shaded area if you're hosting a picnic. You can always keep the desserts in a cooler until right before serving. Check out this insulated picnic cooler from Amazon. It even comes in a cute red checkered plaid!

To freeze cake layers, be sure to let them cool completely after baking. Then, wrap each layer tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil to prevent freezer burn. You can also place the wrapped layers in a resealable freezer bag for extra protection against freezer burn.
Make sure that you grease and flour your cake pans before pouring in the batter. You can also line the bottoms of your cake pans with parchment paper for extra insurance against sticking.
