How to Store Fresh Strawberries
Strawberries can be a delicious treat, and are a great fruit to use when creating a summer mocktail. However, they're also a delicate fruit and prone to spoiling quickly.
Fortunately, with a few easy tips, you can keep them fresh and delicious for much longer than you might expect:
- Do not wash them right away: Water is a strawberry's worst enemy, accelerating spoilage. Wait to wash them until just before you're ready to enjoy their juicy goodness.
- Store them properly: Skip airtight containers, as strawberries need to breathe. Choose a shallow bowl, or a container with a loose lid for optimal air circulation.
- Line with paper towels or coffee filters: Place a layer of paper towels on the bottom of your container. This will help absorb any excess moisture and keep your strawberries dry.
- Store in the refrigerator: Place your container of strawberries in the refrigerator. The cool temperature will help slow down the ripening process.
If you have a large amount of strawberries, consider freezing them. Frozen strawberries are perfect for smoothies, sauces, and baked goods.
