Baking the Perfect Breakfast Casserole
Slice the cinnamon rolls using a sharp knife, kitchen shears, or a pizza cutter. For a speedy shortcut, stack 3-4 rolls together and cut through them all at once with a sharp knife.
Baking times may vary depending on your oven, so keep an eye on your casserole and use a toothpick to check for doneness. My casserole was done in 50 minutes.
If you find the casserole is getting too brown while baking, you can cover it loosely with aluminum foil.
Don't over bake the casserole, or it'll become dry. Start checking it at 25 minutes - you want the center set and puffed, even if it's not as high as the edges.
This recipe uses the canned icing that comes with the refrigerated rolls. If you want, you can swap it out for my Homemade Cream Cheese Frosting.

Substitutions and Variations
- Try adding chopped nuts, dried cranberries, or even chocolate chips in with the casserole before baking.
- Sprinkle ¾ cup crispy chopped cooked bacon over the cinnamon rolls before adding the topping.
- Toss chopped pecans, almonds or walnuts with the topping before baking.
- For a more heartier breakfast casserole, add 4 eggs mixed with 2 cups of milk and pour over the cinnamon rolls before adding the brown sugar crumble topping.
- Right before serving add a drizzle of caramel sauce or maple syrup to the top.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Make the crumble by mixing flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt together.
Step 2: Use a pastry cutter or fork to blend the butter into the flour mixture.
Step 3: Mix the butter and dry mixture together until crumbly. Set aside.
Step 4: Add the apple filling to a dish that's been sprayed with nonstick spray. Top with the cut up cinnamon rolls.
Why add heavy cream to cinnamon rolls?
As the cream heats up in the oven, it creates steam, which helps keep the cinnamon rolls moist and tender. The cream also soaks into the rolls, contributing to a softer texture.
Step 5: Pour heavy cream over the top.
Step 6: Then top with the crumble mixture.
Baking Instructions
Step 7: Bake at 350°F for about 50-55 minutes until the crumble is golden brown and the cinnamon rolls are cooked through.
Step 8: Use the icing that came with the tube of cinnamon rolls and drizzle on top of the casserole.

Feel free to swap the apple pie filling for another fruit variety like cherry, blueberry, peach, or mixed berry. Just keep the consistency in mind, and adjust the crumble's sweetness if needed!
If the crumble is getting too brown but the casserole isn't fully cooked yet, loosely tent the dish with aluminum foil to protect the topping while the center continues to bake.
Breakfast Casserole Prep Ahead Tips
You can put this casserole together the night before! Just assemble everything except the brown sugar topping, cover it well, and pop it in the fridge. Store the topping separately in the fridge too.
The next morning, let the casserole sit out for about 30-45 minutes so it comes to room temperature a bit – this helps it bake more evenly. Then, add the topping and bake as directed!
Storage and Reheating Instructions
Refrigerate: Let the casserole cool fully on the counter before storing. This helps keep it from getting soggy. Store leftovers in an airtight container or cover the dish well with plastic wrap or foil. It'll stay good in the fridge for 3-4 days.
Freezer: Wrap the baking dish tightly in plastic wrap, ensuring no gaps for air to enter. Then, wrap the entire dish in aluminum foil for an extra layer of protection. Label the wrapped portions or casserole with the date and contents. Place in the freezer and freeze for up to 2-3 months for best quality.
Thaw and Reheat: To reheat, use a microwave for quick heating, or bake at 350°F for 15-20 minutes until heated through. If reheating from frozen, allow the casserole to thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
