👩🍳Make Ahead Christmas Breakfast
- You can easily prepare this casserole the night before you plan on serving it.
- Follow the recipe steps below, cover it with aluminum foil and place it in the refrigerator up to 12 hours.
- When you're ready to bake,
- For added convenience, you can prepare this casserole ahead of time and simply bake it when you're ready. To do so, follow the recipe instructions to assemble the casserole. Cover it with foil and refrigerate for up to 12 hours.
- When you're ready to bake, allow the breakfast casserole to sit out at room temperature for about 30 minutes before baking.
- Glass casserole dishes are sensitive to sudden temperature changes, and the extreme difference between the cold casserole and the hot oven can cause the glass to expand or contract rapidly, leading to breakage. Which is something you don't want to happen on Christmas morning!
- Bake it according to the recipe instructions. If it's still cold when it goes in the oven, you may need to slightly extend the total baking time.

📋Ingredients
This is an overview of the ingredients and instructions. Be sure to see the recipe card below for exact quantities, detailed instructions and special notes.
💡 Substitutions and Variations
- Use your favorite berries! We used blueberries and raspberries, but strawberries and blackberries would also be a great addition or substitution.
- Lemon juice and lemon zest would make a good substitution for the orange.
- You can substitute the croissants with French Bread.
📌Quick Tip: Toasting the croissants dries them out so they can soak up the custard without becoming soggy.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Cube the croissants into small pieces and bake on a baking sheet for about 9 minutes. Remove and allow to cool.
Step 2: Make the custard by combining the cream cheese and sugar with a mixer. Mix in the eggs, heavy cream, orange juice and zest, vanilla, and salt.
Step 3: Assemble the casserole by layering half the croissants, berries, and custard. Repeat the layers then gently press down so the croissants are submerged in the custard.
Step 4: After the croissants have had a chance to soak up the custard, cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes at 350°F. Remove the foil after 30 minutes to crisp up the top.
Prepare the Powdered Sugar Glaze
Step 5: Melt the butter, then add it to the powdered sugar, vanilla, and heavy cream.
Step 6: Using a wire whisk, combine until the glaze is smooth and has no lumps. Check out my favorite set of wire whisks.
Step 7: Pour the glaze over the slightly cooled breakfast casserole.
Serving Tips
Serve warm and with extra glaze on the side in case your family and friends would like a little extra sweetness!
