Tips for Making the Best Christmas Tree Brownies
- Boost the Flavor: Swap oil for melted butter to create richer, bakery-style brownies with a deeper, indulgent flavor.
- Make Them Extra Moist: Replace the water with milk or heavy cream for brownies that are fudgier and gooier.
- Balance the Sweetness: Add a pinch of salt to the batter to tone down sweetness and enhance the chocolate flavor.
- Line with Parchment: Always line your pan with parchment paper for brownies and bar cookies. It makes lifting them out easy and keeps edges from sticking.
- Perfect Tree Shapes: Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to slice the brownies into neat triangles before decorating.
- Mess-Free Decorating: Chill brownies for 15–20 minutes before adding frosting and sprinkles to keep decorations from melting or sliding.
- Festive Finishing Touch: Add a small candy cane or pretzel stick to the bottom of each brownie to create a “tree trunk.”

Substitutions and Variations
- Try using your favorite homemade brownie recipe in place of the boxed brownie mix.
- Instead of cutting the Christmas trees with a knife, cookie cutters can also be used. You can do a variety of fun Christmas shapes along with the tree shapes!
- This recipe calls for green food coloring, however, all I had on hand was red and blue...which when mixed made a nice shade of green!
- For this recipe I used candy coated chocolate chips, but you can use your favorite holiday sprinkles!
- Mini chocolate baking chips
- Fun blend of bright and dark colors
- Sweet candy coating with mild chocolate center
- Provide ice packs while shipping to ensure product will not melt
- Packaged in sealed / resealable zip lock bag (1 lb.)

Insider Tips from My Kitchen to Yours
Want to make this recipe even better? Don’t miss my favorite tips below for boosting flavor, perfecting texture, and saving time in the kitchen!
✔️ DO chill brownies before cutting and decorating to prevent crumbs and smudged frosting.
❌ DO NOT try to decorate warm brownies—frosting will melt and run.
How to Store, Freeze, and Thaw
Refrigerate: Store decorated brownies in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Place parchment paper between layers to prevent sticking.
Freezer: Wrap undecorated brownies tightly in plastic wrap, then in foil, and freeze for up to 2 months.
Thawing Tips: Transfer frozen brownies to the refrigerator and let them thaw overnight. Decorate once fully thawed to keep the frosting and sprinkles looking fresh.

Use a sharp knife and be sure to clean it off in between cuts, especially when the frosting sticks to the knife.
I wouldn’t recommend freezing decorated brownies. The frosting and sprinkles don’t hold up well after thawing and can lose their texture and appearance. If you want to freeze them, do so before decorating and add the festive touches after thawing.
For fudgier brownies, use melted butter instead of oil and replace the water with milk or heavy cream. You can also slightly underbake them and remove from the oven when a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.

- Preheat the oven to the baking temperature indicated on the box of brownie mix.
- Prepare a 9x13 inch baking pan by lining it with parchment paper, leaving overhang along the sides to make it easier to lift the brownies out of the pan after baking.
- Spread the brownie batter evely into the prepared baking pan, then bake according to the package directions. Remove from the oven and cool the brownies to room temperature in the pan.
- Pour the heavy cream into a medium microwave-safe bowl and heat in the microwave on high for 60-90 seconds until hot. Add the white chocolate chips and stir until completely melted, then mix in green food coloring until your desired color is reached.
- Pour the frosting over the brownies and spread out evenly. Sprinkle the candy coated mini chocolate chips all over the top of the frosting.
- Place the pan of frosted brownies in the refrigerator to chill until the frosting is completely set; about an hour.
- Once set, lift the brownies out of the pan. Use a sharp knife to cut the sheet of brownies longways across into three strips. Cut each strip into triangles to resemble Christmas trees.
