Are Crescent Rolls Good After Expiration?
While it's often safe to use crescent rolls past their expiration date, the quality may deteriorate over time. They may not rise as well or have the same texture and flavor as fresh rolls.
After opening the can you notice the dough is discolored (grayish or greenish), discard it. If the dough has a sour or unpleasant smell, it's no longer good. Of course, if there are any signs of mold growth, they should be thrown away.
How to Open Crescent Rolls
- Open the tube of crescent rolls by peeling away from the tab right under the top of the can. Find the perforated edge of the dough and gently roll the cylinder of dough flat.
- Separate the dough into 8 triangles. Then roll up the triangles starting at the wide end.
- Place on an ungreased cookie sheet or a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Shape the rolled dough triangles into the crescent or "half moon" shape before baking.
How to Roll Crescent Rolls
Starting at the wide end of each triangle, gently roll the dough towards the point. As you roll, curve the dough slightly to form the crescent shape. Place the rolled crescent rolls on the prepared baking sheet with the point tucked underneath.
Top Tip
Make sure the dough is cold when you unroll it. Cold dough is easier to handle and less likely to stick or tear. If the dough gets too warm, it can become difficult to separate the triangles and maintain their shape. So, keep the dough refrigerated until you're ready to use it, and work quickly once you've unrolled it.
