They're an easy-to-make cut out Valentine's Day Recipe decorated with heart sprinkles making them festive as well as delicious.
This recipe was inspired by my Chocolate Christmas Cookies. In fact, it's the same recipe. I love how interchangeable this recipe is. The Christmas cookies are made as a slice and bake cookie and these Valentine's Day cookie recipe is a cut out cookie.
You could make these for any occasion simply by changing the cookie cutter shape. Or using a different type of sprinkle. They would look great on a bridal shower dessert table too!

Heart Shaped Cookies
Heart shaped cookies are so easy to make. All it takes is a good recipe and a good set of heart shaped cookie cutters. You can use the cookie cutters for Heart Shaped Chocolate Chip Cookies, Heart Shaped Brownies.
Although my favorite recipe is to make Shortbread Cookies and use a heart shaped cookie cutter. Just don't forget to dip half the hearts in melted chocolate for the perfect Valentine Day Cookie.

- Granulated sugar
- Eggs - room temperature so they blend more evenly into the cookie dough.
- Pure vanilla extract
- Flour
- Unsweetened cocoa powder
- Baking powder
- Salt
- White baking chips for dipping - you can also use white almond bark.
- Valentine's Day colored sprinkles
🥣Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1 | Combine the Ingredients
- In the bowl of your KitchenAid mixer, add the butter. Cream until smooth and fluffy.
- Add the sugar followed by the eggs, vanilla extract.
- In another bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt.
- Gradually add the mixture to the butter and sugar mixture until a soft dough forms.
Step 2 | Chill the Dough
- Shape the dough into a disc.
- Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes.
- You could also freeze the dough for up to 6 months at this point.
Step 3 | Baking and Decorating
- On a surface dusted with cocoa powder or flour, roll out the dough and cut out heart shapes. Place the cookies on baking trays lined with parchment paper. Place the baking trays in the refrigerator to chill the cookies for another 30 minutes before baking.
- Bake the cookies at 350°F for 8 to 10 minutes or until the edges are slightly golden. Remove from the tray and place on cooling rack to cool. Allow the cookies to cool completely before decorating.
- Melt the white chocolate according to the package directions.
- Dip the melted chocolate cookie side immediately into the sprinkles.
Step 4 | Storing Tips
- Place the cookies on a piece of wax paper to completely harden before storing in plastic containers.

Substitutions and Variations
- Different Colored Sprinkles - change the sprinkles for different holidays or celebrations. Orange for Halloween, red and pink for Valentine's Day or red, white and blue for summer patriotic celebrations.
- Cookie Cutters - use any cookie cutter shape for this recipe. Use a shamrock shape for St. Patrick's Day or an egg shape for Easter. dough and cut out shapes with your favorite cookie cutters.
- Melted Chocolate - dip the cookies in melted milk or dark chocolate!
- Crushed Walnuts, Peppermint Candies - try dipping the cookies in either crushed walnuts or crushed peppermint candies after dipping in the melted chocolate.
Prep Ahead Tips
- You can easily freeze the Valentine's Day Cookie Recipe dough once you form it into the round disc.
- Wrap the disc in plastic wrap, then place the disc in a freezer safe plastic bag.
- Place the bag in the freezer...don't forget to label the bag with the date and name of cookie.
- This dough will remain fresh in the freezer for up to six months.
- When you're ready to bake, remove the disc from the freezer and let it defrost in the refrigerator.
- Continue with the baking and decorating steps above.
Storage Tips
- Store the cookies in an airtight container either at room temperature for 5 days or in the refrigerator for 10 days.
- If you want to freeze the cookies, I would not dip them in the melted chocolate.
- You can also freeze the cookies after they've been baked. Place the baked cooled cookies on a baking tray lined with parchment paper in the freezer. After about 30 minutes the cookies should be frozen. Remove them from the tray and place in a freezer safe container or plastic bag.
- The cookies will keep in the freezer for up to six months.
- Remove the cookies from the freezer and lay them flat to defrost, then decorate with the melted chocolate and sprinkles.
Top Tip
- You could also shape the cookie dough into logs to slice and bake like I did with my Chocolate Christmas Cookies.

Valentine's Day Cookie Recipe
Equipment
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter; softened
- 1 ½ cups sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 cups flour
- ⅔ cups baking cocoa
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 12 ounces White Melting Chocolate candy melts or almond bark
- Valentine's Day Sprinkles
Instructions
- In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs and vanilla.
- In another bowl, stir together the flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients.
- Shape the dough into a disc and cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate 30 minutes or longer until firm. You could also freeze the logs at this point in the recipe to bake later. Wrap in aluminum foil after the plastic wrap if you want to freeze cookie dough.
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- On a surface dusted with cocoa powder or flour, roll out the dough and cut out heart shapes.
- Place the cookies on baking trays lined with parchment paper. Place the baking trays in the refrigerator to chill the cookies for another 30 minutes before baking.
- Bake cookies for 8 to 10 minutes or until edges of slices are golden.
- Remove cookies from baking sheets, and place on wire racks. Let cool completely before dipping in the melted white chocolate.
- Melt the white chocolate according to the package directions.
- Make sure the cookies have cooled completely before dipping half the cookie into melted chocolate.
- Dip the melted chocolate cookie side immediately into the sprinkles.
- Place the cookies on a piece of wax paper to completely harden before storing in plastic containers.
Notes
- You can even dip the cookie into chopped walnuts, chopped peppermint candies immediately after dipping them in the melted chocolate.
- The total number of cookies you get from the recipe depends on the size cookie cutters you use.
