Main Ingredients Needed
This is an overview of the ingredients and instructions. Be sure to see the recipe card below for exact quantities, detailed instructions and special notes.
- Puff Pastry - you can find puff pastry in the freezer section of your grocery store.
- Nutella Hazelnut Spread - be careful not to spread too much so it doesn't seep out when you slice and twist the branches of the tree.
- Egg - brush this on right before baking to give the pastry a beautiful golden color.
- Powdered Sugar - sprinkled on top after baking.
Recipe Variations
Savory Dip- spread spinach dip in place of the Nutella spread for a savory appetizer.
Jam - use your favorite jam on top of the puff pastry sheet!
Pizza Sauce - add pizza sauce for a kid-friendly version of the recipe.
See this savory recipe on my website with my Christmas Tree Puff Pastry Appetizer.
Step-by-Step Directions
Step 1: Lightly flour a sheet of parchment paper. Unfold the dough directly on it, then gently roll it out with a rolling pin to a large 11 x 13 inch rectangle. Carefully lift the parchment paper with the rolled dough and transfer it to a baking sheet.
Step 2: Spread a generous layer of Nutella hazelnut spread across the puff pastry sheet, keeping a slight margin around the edges.
Step 3: Take the second sheet of puff pastry and unfold it onto a lightly floured surface. Using a rolling pin, gently roll it out until it also forms an 11 x 13 inch rectangle.
Step 4: Carefully lift the second sheet of rolled puff pastry and place it directly on top of the Nutella-covered sheet. Gently press down along the edges and surface to seal the two layers of pastry together.
Top Tip
Remember, don't spread too much Nutella on top of the bottom layer of the puff pastry dough. If you do, it might be too difficult to twist and shape the tree branches.
How to Cut Puff Pastry Dough
Step 5: Using a template, cut a festive shape from the puff pastry. Don't discard the scraps - they'll become stars and a tree trunk later. Lightly score a center line down the tree with a ruler. Finally, create the branches by making shallow cuts along both sides, stopping before the center line.
How to Twist the Branches
Step 6: Starting at the bottom of the tree, gently twist each branch away from you, pressing the edge into the parchment paper to secure the twist. Continue twisting all the branches, working your way up both sides of the tree. Use your leftover dough to cut out a decorative star for the treetop and a small piece to form the stump. If you wish, roll the remaining dough into crescent rolls and bake them alongside.
Baking Instructions
Step 7: Brush the entire pastry with the beaten egg for a golden finish. Bake in your preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until puffed and golden brown. Let it cool slightly, then sprinkle with powdered sugar for a festive touch. Carefully slide the Christmas tree pastry off the parchment paper and onto a serving platter.
Tear and Share Christmas Tree
All your guests need to do is pull a branch, and tear it off and enjoy!

Puff Pastry Storage Tips
Store any leftovers in an air-tight container either in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. I do not recommend freezing any leftovers.

Nutella Puff Pastry Christmas Tree
dough that's shaped into a Christmas tree then baked until golden brown
and sprinkled with powdered sugar.
Ingredients
- 1 - 17.3 oz package frozen puff pastry (2 sheets), thawed but still cold
- 4 - 6 tablespoons Nutella Hazelnut Spread
- 1 egg beaten
- Powdered sugar
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F degrees.
- Sprinkle a little flour on top of a sheet of parchment paper.
- Unfold one sheet of puff pastry on top of the parchment paper. Using a rolling pin, gently roll out the puff pastry sheet into an 11 X 13 inch rectangle. Gently lift the parchment paper and transfer to a baking sheet.
- Spread the Nutella hazelnut spread on top of the puff pastry sheet being careful not to go too close to the edge.
- Unfold the second sheet of puff pastry and place on a lightly floured surface. Roll it out also into an 11 X 13 inch rectangle.
- Gently place the second sheet of puff pastry on top of the first sheet of puff pastry that has the Nutella spread. Press gently to seal the two sheets together.
- Using a piece of printer paper or parchment paper, cut out a Christmas tree shape to use as a template.
- Place the Christmas tree template on top of the puff pastry and using a pizza cutter or a sharp knife, cut out the Christmas tree shape. Reserve the extra pieces.
- Place a ruler down the center of the puff pastry Christmas tree to use as a guide.
- Starting on one side, make horizontal slices into the sides of the Christmas tree triangle being careful to stop before you reach the center.
- Repeat the same process on the other side of the Christmas tree triangle; again being careful to stop before reaching the center. You want to leave a 1 to 2 inch section down the middle of the tree that is not sliced.
- Starting at the bottom, twist the branches away from you. Press the edge of the branch firmly into the parchment paper to keep the branch from untwisting.
- Continue twisting the branches moving up the tree and then move on to the other side and twist those branches as well.
- With the excess puff pastry, use a star cookie cutter and make a star for the top of the tree.
- Then cut a little piece of dough to make the "stump" of the tree.
- Brush the entire pastry with the beaten egg.
- Bake in the preheated 375°F oven for about 15 - 18 minutes or until puffy and golden brown.
- Cool slightly before sprinkling powdered sugar on top.
