What Traditions are Celebrated on Cinco de Mayo?
Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican national holiday that is also celebrated in the United States. Traditionally, it was a day for Mexican Americans to celebrate their heritage, but these days, it is quite popular in the United States and has evolved into a HUGE celebration of Mexican culture.
Traditions include parades, mariachi musical performances and street festivals in cities and towns across Mexico and the United States. In Mexico, it’s a relatively minor holiday, but we Americans LOVE a good party…especially when there is food involved.
How does a traditional Cinco de Mayo meal compare to what most Americans serve?
In Mexico, a traditional Cinco de Mayo meal typically includes dishes such as chalupas, enchiladas, tamales, tacos, chilaquiles and lots of guacamole. These are often served alongside sides such as rice and refried beans.
In contrast, what Americans traditionally serve on Cinco de Mayo usually consists of chips and salsa, Mexican-themed snacks like nachos and quesadillas, different variations of tacos (such as hard and soft shell), burritos and chimichangas. Margaritas are also often served to accompany this meal.
