Recipe Notes
Be sure to melt the chocolate slowly in the microwave, stirring frequently to avoid overheating, which can cause the chocolate to seize. If it becomes too thick, add a little more oil or shortening to thin it out---do not add water!
When adding food coloring, make sure it's oil based or gel based, as water based food coloring can cause the chocolate to seize. Add a small amount at a time until you achieve the desired hue.
For faster drying, place the dipped pretzels in the refrigerator for about 10-15 minutes. This will help the chocolate harden more quickly, especially if your kitchen is warm.

Substitutions and Variations
- Try using other Halloween themed colors like black, purple, or green food coloring for the almond bark.
- Instead of almond bark, you can use vanilla flavored melting wafers like Candy Melts that come in a variety of colors.
- Add Halloween themed sprinkles or candy eyes to the wet almond bark before it sets.
- If you don't have any on hand, you can make your own pumpkin pie spice blend.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Melt the almond bark in 30 second increments, stirring in between each.
Step 2: Add a few drops of the food coloring and stir. Continue until you reach the desired shade.
Quick Tip
This recipe calls for orange food coloring, but don't worry if you don't have any on hand! As you can see from the ingredients photo, I got creative and mixed yellow and pink food coloring with the almond bark. Voila! A perfect shade of orange for our spooky treats.
Step 3: Dip the pretzels into the colored white chocolate and place on a piece of parchment paper or wax paper to harden. If you need to, you can place the pretzels in the refrigerator to hurry the drying process along.
Step 4: Melt the chocolate chips in 30 second increments. Then stir in the pumpkin pie spice.
Step 5: Drizzle the melted chocolate over the dried orange pretzels.

Stir in 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil, coconut oil, or canola oil for every cup of melted chocolate. You can also add about 1 tablespoon of shortening per cup of melted chocolate. This will make the chocolate smoother and easier to dip.
The chocolate may not have been heated and cooled properly. Overheating chocolate can prevent it from setting. To avoid this, melt the chocolate slowly and evenly, either in a double boiler or microwave, and allow it to cool slightly before dipping.
High humidity can also cause chocolate to remain soft. Try working in a cooler, less humid environment to help the chocolate harden properly.
If you're using chocolate chips or candy bars, they may contain additives that prevent proper hardening. For best results, use chocolate specifically made for melting and coating.
Storing, Freezing, and Thawing Instructions
Room Temperature: Store the chocolate dipped pretzels in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. You can refrigerate them, but be aware that refrigeration may cause the chocolate to develop a white coating (bloom) due to temperature changes.
Freezer: Allow the chocolate to fully set and harden at room temperature before freezing. Place the chocolate covered pretzels in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze them for 1-2 hours. Once frozen, transfer the pretzels to an airtight container or a zip top freezer bag, separating layers with parchment or wax paper to avoid sticking. Freeze for up to 3 months.
Thaw: To avoid condensation, thaw the pretzels in the refrigerator for a few hours before bringing them to room temperature. This gradual thawing helps prevent the chocolate from becoming discolored or developing a white coating (bloom). Avoid opening the container until they've reached room temperature to prevent moisture from condensing on the chocolate.
Top Recipe Tip
Heat the chocolate slowly in 30 second increments so you don't scorch it.

Halloween Dipped Pretzels
Ingredients
- 12 ounces white chocolate almond bark (6 cubes)
- 1 tablespoon oil (neutral flavored)
- orange food coloring (or yellow and pink)
- 2 cups pretzels
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
- 2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
Instructions
- Place the white chocolate bark in a microwave-safe bowl and add ½ tablespoon of oil. Microwave for 45 seconds. Stir the chocolate and continue to melt for 30 seconds at a time until the chocolate is completely melted.
- Add a few drops of food coloring and stir, repeat until the desired orange is achieved. If you use yellow and pink, the ratio should be 2 yellow to 1 pink.
- Once you get the color you want, begin dipping the pretzels into the orange chocolate, fully coating in the chocolate. Then place the covered pretzels on parchment to dry.
- While the pretzels dry, melt the semisweet chocolate chips the same way you melted the white chocolate.
- Once melted, add the pumpkin pie spice and mix.
- Drizzle the melted chocolate all over the orange pretzels then let harden before packaging.
