How to use Puff Pastry
Keep it Cold: Puff Pastry needs to be cold as you're working with it. If it's too warm, the butter in the pastry will melt and won't create the steam necessary for the layers to puff up properly. Return it to the refrigerator if it starts to soften.
Light Hand: Avoid overworking the dough, as this can toughen the pastry. Handle it as little as possible and roll it gently.
Sharp Knife: Use a sharp knife or a pizza cutter to cut the dough to prevent sealing the layers and hindering the rise.

Storage and Reheating Instructions
Room Temperature: These Nutella trees are best stored at room temperature in an airtight container to maintain their texture and prevent them from drying out. 1 They should keep well for 3-5 days.
Freezer: Flash freeze them solid (about 1-2 hours) on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. This prevents them from sticking together. They'll stay fresh for up to 3 months.
Thaw and Reheat: Thaw them overnight in the refrigerator. You can enjoy them cold, but for a warm and flaky treat, reheat them briefly in the microwave (15-30 seconds) or a toaster oven.

Nutella Christmas Trees on Sticks
Print Pin Rate Save RecipeIngredients
- 1 (17.3 ounce) package frozen puff pastry (2 sheets), thawed but still cold
- 4 - 6 tablespoons Nutella Hazelnut Spread
- 1 egg, beaten
- powdered sugar
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F degrees.
- Sprinkle a little flour on top of a sheet of parchment paper.
- Unfold one sheet of puff pastry on top of the parchment paper. Using a rolling pin, gently roll out the puff pastry sheet into an 11 x 13 inch rectangle.
- Spread the Nutella hazelnut spread on top of the puff pastry sheet being careful not to go too close to the edge.
- Unfold the second sheet of puff pastry and place on a lightly floured surface. Roll it out also into an 11 x 13 inch rectangle.
- Gently place the second sheet of puff pastry on top of the first sheet of puff pastry that has the Nutella spread. Press gently to seal the two sheets together.
- Use a pizza cutter to make 1 inch wide strips. You could get 10-12 strips.
- Take one strip of dough and roll it up accordion style with a minimum of four layers. You want a smaller end at the top so the strips taper into a triangle to look like a tree.
- Then insert the skewer through the center of the dough. Place each one on a baking sheet that’s been lined with parchment paper. Cover the “stars” of the skewers with aluminum foil. Brush each tree with the beaten egg.
- Bake for about 20 - 25 minutes or until puffy and golden brown.
- Remove from the baking tray to cool. Dust with powdered sugar after they’ve cooled slightly.
