One of my favorite treats for Fall is enjoying pumpkin spice donuts. I think this recipe I'm sharing with you today for Pumpkin Glazed Donuts is better than the Dunkin Donuts pumpkin donut recipe because of the crumb topping and sweet glaze.

Dunkin Donuts Pumpkin Donut Recipe
To make these donuts, I used the same recipe for my Pumpkin Muffins. My pumpkin muffins is also very similar to Dunkin Donuts pumpkin muffin recipe, which I just tried for the first time this weekend.

What if I can't find a box of spice cake mix?
Lately it’s been hard to find spice cake mix in grocery stores. You can add the following spices to the dry mix of a vanilla or white cake mix:
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
- ¼ teaspoon allspice or cloves

Main Ingredients Needed

For the Donuts
- 1 box spice cake mix
- Canned pumpkin puree; NOT pumpkin pie filling
- Eggs
- Melted butter
For the Crumb Topping
- Brown Sugar
- Flour
- Pumpkin pie spice - If you don't have any in your pantry, try my homemade pumpkin pie spice recipe.
- Butter
- Quaker Quick Oats; uncooked
For the Glaze
- Powdered sugar
- Milk
- Vanilla
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: In a bowl, combine your crumb topping ingredients. Using a pastry cutter or two knives, work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside.
Step 2: In a mixing bowl, combine the cake mix, pumpkin puree, eggs and melted butter. Mix until combined.
How to Fill a Pastry Bag
Take a large plastic storage bag or a Disposable Decorating Pastry Bag, and place it inside a large drinking glass or tall jar.
Cuff the excess bag over the sides of the glass. Make sure the inside of the bag is smooth by pressing it to the sides of the drinking glass.
Spoon the batter into the bag using a spatula being careful not to fill it all the way up or the batter will overflow once you start squeezing.
Gently lift the bag out of the glass jar and squeeze it gently to work the batter down into the bottom of the bag.
Twist the end of the bag and snip one corner with the kitchen scissors. Gently squeeze the batter into the wells of the donut pan.
How to Fill a Donut Pan
Step 3: Fill a pastry bag with the batter and pipe it into a greased donut pan. Smooth the batter with a butter knife, then top each donut with a tablespoon of the crumb mixture.
Baking Instructions
Step 4: Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into a donut comes out clean. Let cool slightly in the pan before removing.
Add the Homemade Glaze
Step 5: Combine the glaze ingredients together. Drizzle over the cooled donuts.

Why are my cake mix donuts falling apart?
The biggest problem is they're not completely baked. Donuts are completely baked when they begin to pull away from the sides of the pan.
How do I know when my cake mix donuts are fully baked?
Cake mix donuts are fully baked when they begin to pull away from the sides of the pan. The edges are lightly browned and the bounces back when touched.
How do I remove the baked donuts from the donut pan?
Use a spoon or butter knife to gently go around the edge of the donut pan and underneath the donuts. Also, remember to generously spray your pan with non-stick cooking spray before baking to prevent the donuts from sticking.
Storage Tips
You can store homemade cake mix donuts in an airtight container, or a Ziplock bag, or wrap them tightly with aluminum foil. This way, you can keep them fresh and prevent them from getting stale.
Stored this way they should stay fresh for up to 5 days.
Freezing Tips
Before freezing, make sure the cake mix donuts are completely cooled down. This helps prevent moisture buildup and sogginess during the freezing process.
Wrap each donut individually in plastic wrap or place them in separate freezer bags. This prevents them from sticking together and makes it easier to thaw only what you need later.
Once wrapped, place the wrapped donuts in airtight containers or freezer-safe bags. Label them with the date for easy identification.
Thawing and Reheating Tips
When you're ready to enjoy the frozen donuts, remove them from the freezer and let them thaw at room temperature.
Once thawed, you can reheat them in the oven at a low temperature or microwave them briefly to regain their freshness.

Pumpkin Glazed Donuts with Crumb Topping
Ingredients
For the Donuts
- 1 box spice cake mix
- ¾ cup canned pumpkin puree; NOT pumpkin pie filling
- 2 eggs
- 3 tablespoon melted butter
For the Crumb Topping
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ¼ cup flour
- 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- 2 tablespoon butter
- 2 tablespoon Quaker Quick Oats
For the Glaze
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tablespoon milk
- ½ tsp. vanilla
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Combine the crumb topping ingredients in a bowl and using a pastry cutter, or two knives cut the butter into the mixture until you have crumbs; set aside.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the cake mix, pumpkin puree, eggs and melted butter. Mix until combined.
- Using a plastic pastry bag, add the mixture into the donut pan that has been sprayed with a non-stick spray. Use a butter knife to spread the donut batter out smoothly.
- Place about one tablespoon of the crumb mixture onto the top of each donut batter.
- Bake for 10 minutes to 12 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into one of the donuts comes out clean. Let the donuts cool slightly before removing them from the pan.
- Combine the glaze ingredients together and drizzle over the cooled donuts.
Notes
Freezing Tips:
- These donuts will freeze well for up to 2 months.
- Place the donuts on a baking tray that's been lined with parchment paper and then place the tray in the freezer to flash freeze the donuts for about 30 minutes.
- Remove the frozen donuts and place in a freezer safe container or plastic bag.
- You can freeze the donuts for up to 2 months.
- Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and warm up to your liking in the microwave.

Im making these this weekend. In the recipe it says add the batter then add the topping before baking. Shouldnt you add the topping in first so when you flip them out its on top? Just wanna make sure i do it right cause they look soooo good!!
