My daughter, Olivia, loved mozzarella sticks and I know she would have loved helping create these these cheesy mummies when she was little!
The beauty of using refrigerated dough is that it not only wraps the cheese stick easily, but will also help create the tattered scraps of cloth you see on a mummy.
Refrigerated dough truly is a versatile ingredient for creating these festive treats, making them both easy and impressive.

Recipe Notes
Freeze the cheese sticks for at least 2 hours to prevent them from melting too quickly during baking.
Make sure the dough wraps tightly around the cheese to avoid a cheesy mess.
Have fun with the "bandages"! Twist, tear, and overlap the dough strips for a truly mummified effect.
Brushing the mummies with the egg white will give them a beautiful golden-brown color.
Keep a close eye on the mummies as they bake. They can go from golden brown to overdone quickly!
Let the mummies cool for a few minutes before adding the candy eyes, so they don't melt.
Serve your Mummy Mozzarella Sticks with marinara sauce, ranch dressing, or your favorite pizza dipping sauce for extra flavor!

Substitutions and Variations
- Instead of crescent roll dough, use puff pastry sheets for a flakier, more buttery crust.
- Or you can use pizza dough!
- Experiment with other types of cheese sticks like cheddar, Colby Jack, or pepper Jack for a variety of flavors.
- Mix Italian seasoning into the dough or sprinkle it on top before baking for a savory twist.
- If you don't want to use the egg white, try brushing melted butter on top of each mummy before baking.
- If you don't have candy eyes, you can use small dots of melted chocolate or frosting to create eyes.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Top Tip
Make sure you freeze the cheese sticks for at least 2-4 hours before starting this recipe. Freezing helps the cheese stick hold its shape and prevents it from melting too quickly during baking or frying. If they aren't frozen, the cheese inside will likely melt and ooze out before the crescent roll gets golden brown and crispy.
Step 1: Preheat oven to 375°F. Unroll one tube of crescent dough. Press two triangles together place the cheese stick on top.
Step 2: Wrap a thin layer of dough around each frozen cheese stick, ensuring complete coverage. Stretch the dough if needed. Repeat until all 8 cheese sticks are covered. Then using the remaining crescent rolls, cut thin strips to create the "bandages."
Step 3: Place them on a baking sheet that's been lined with parchment paper. Chill the tray for at least 30 minutes.
Quick Tip
Chill the dough in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. This will help the rolls keep their shape and prevent them from spreading too much during baking.
Oven Baking Instructions
Step 4: Brush with the egg white. This will help give them that shiny golden color. Bake for 10 minutes or until golden brown.
Air Frying Instructions
Air fry the mummies at 375°F for 8-10 minutes, ensuring they're in a single layer with space between them. No oil is needed! They're ready when the dough is golden brown and the cheese is melted. Handle with care as the cheese will be hot.

Freezing helps the cheese sticks hold their shape during frying. If they aren't frozen, the cheese inside will melt and ooze out before they get baked.
To make ahead, assemble the mummies, freeze until solid, then store in an airtight container for up to 2 months. Reheat from frozen in a 350°F air fryer or oven until golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
Storage and Reheating Instructions
Refrigerate: Place the cooled mozzarella sticks in an airtight container or resealable bag. If you store them while they're still warm, they'll become soggy from the excess moisture. They will remain fresh for up to 3-4 days.
Freezer: Flash freeze the baked mummy crescents by placing them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and freeze for about 1 hour, or until solid. Remove from the freezer and store in an airtight plastic container or storage bag.
Thaw and Reheat: Reheat the mummies directly from the freezer. The air fryer is the best way to reheat leftover mozzarella stick mummies as it will help them crisp up again. Preheat the air fryer to 350°F and reheat for 3-5 minutes, or until heated through and the dough is crispy.

Mummy Mozzarella Sticks
Equipment
Ingredients
- 8 Mozzarella String Cheese Sticks
- 2 - 8 ounce tubes of refrigerated crescent rolls
- 1 egg white
- 16 candy eyes
Instructions
- Place the mozzarella cheese sticks in the freezer and freeze for 2-4 hours.
- Preheat oven to 375°F
- Unroll one tube of crescent roll dough and press the seams of 2 triangles together. Then slice it evenly in half.
- Wrap one half around the frozen cheese stick so the dough completely covers the cheese stick. Make sure it's completely covered. Press the edges together to seal the cheese stick completely in the crescent roll dough.
- Continue this process with all 8 cheese sticks.
- Unroll the second tube of crescent dough and press the seams together. Roll it out to about ½" thickness. Cut thin strips for bandages using a pizza cutter or knife.
- Wrap the dough strips around the cheese sticks, twisting and breaking them for a spooky look. Repeat until all sticks are mummified.
- Place the mummies on a baking tray that's been lined with either parchment paper or aluminum foil.
- Chill the dough in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. This will help the rolls keep their shape and prevent them from spreading too much during baking.
- Brush each mummy cheese stick with the beaten egg white.
- Bake for 10 minutes or until golden brown.
- Remove from oven and immediately press the candy eyes into the top of each mummy. The heat should help them stay in place.
