Substitutions and Variations
Meats: Swap salami for pepperoni, prosciutto, or ham slices for a different flavor or look.
Cheese: Try cheddar, Colby Jack, or mozzarella instead of the classic yellow cheese for the star. You can also use small mozzarella pearls at the top of the skewer.
Pickles: Use small dill pickles, cornichons, or even pretzel sticks as the “tree trunks.”
Holiday Twist: For New Year’s, skip the tree shape and layer the ingredients straight on skewers for a festive party appetizer that still feels special. Check out my recipe for Easy Antipasto Skewers or Caprese Antipasto Skewers.

Step-by-Step Instructions
This section provides step-by-step photos and instructions to guide you through the recipe. For the complete printable version, scroll down to the recipe card below.

Step 1: Using a star shaped cookie cutter, cut 4 stars out of the cheddar cheese. Then use a snowflake cookie cutter to cut snowflakes out of the white cheese.

Step 2: Slice a pickle into 4 pieces for the tree trunks.

Step 3: Add the pickle on the skewer then pierce the folded pieces of salami towards the edge. Alternate which side the salami is pierced for the first 4 branches.

Step 4: To give the next section shorter branches, fold 2 pieces of salami in half and pierce in the middle. For the last piece, fold it into quarters and thread onto the skewer.

Step 5: Top with the cheddar cheese stars and arrange on a serving board with the white cheese snowflakes if serving right away, or store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
Insider Tips from My Kitchen to Yours
✔️ DO prepare the salami trees a few hours ahead of time and keep them covered in the refrigerator until ready to serve for easy entertaining.
❌ DO NOT assemble the skewers too far in advance without covering them; exposure to air can dry out the salami and dull the cheese’s color.

Storage & Serving Tips
Refrigerate: Store the assembled salami trees in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Add the cheese stars just before serving for the best presentation.
Freezer: Freezing leftovers is not recommended, as the salami and cheese can lose their texture once thawed.
Serving Tips: Arrange the trees on a large platter with assorted crackers or other bite-sized appetizers for a festive holiday display.

Yes! You can assemble the skewers a few hours in advance, cover them tightly with plastic wrap, and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Yes, you can use toothpicks instead of skewers if you’d like to make smaller, bite-sized versions. Just fold the salami slices in half or quarters before threading them so the proportions stay balanced and the mini trees keep their shape.
These appetizers can safely sit out for about two hours. If serving at a long event, keep extras chilled and refill the platter as needed.

Method
- Place the cheddar cheese on a board and cut out 4 stars. The leftovers can be used for pizza. Form snowflakes from a slice of white cheese. Use a cookie cutter.
- Cut half a pickle into 4 pieces for the tree trunks. Pat them dry with a paper towel.
- First, pierce one half of the pickle with a skewer. Fold the salami in half. Pierce the salami 1/10 inch from the edge. Pierce the other salami in a mirror image. You now have the lower branches of the tree.
- The next tier should have slightly shorter branches. Leave a ⅕-inch margin from the edge. Simply roll up the next two salamis and prick the center. Fold the last salami in quarters and thread it onto a skewer. Finish the appetizer with a cheddar star.
- Arrange the trees on a serving board and garnish with tree branches and white cheese snowflakes. You can also drizzle with balsamic glaze or sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese for a brighter flavor.
