Tips for Preparing Mason Jar Recipes
- Make sure the dressing is added just before eating to keep the salad fresh and crisp. I suggest storing the dressing in a separate container so the lettuce doesn't wilt.
- If you'd like to put the dressing in the bottom of the jar, skip the first layer of salad mix, and begin with the strawberry layer. Add all the salad mix at the top of the jar.
- When you're ready to eat, gently shake the jar to mix the ingredients or pour the contents into a bowl.

Do Mason Jar Salads get Soggy?
Mason jar salads can stay fresh for days when layered properly. Since this patriotic salad is made with fresh berries, feta cheese, and salad greens, it's best to keep any dressing separate until serving.
- For the best presentation, arrange the strawberries, feta cheese, and blueberries around the sides of the jar first to create the red, white, and blue layers.
- Add the salad greens last so they stay crisp and fresh.

Substitutions and Variations
- Substitute the strawberries with raspberries or sliced red apples for a different red element.
- If blueberries are not available, use blackberries or purple grapes. Swap the feta cheese out with goat cheese or mozzarella for a different flavor.
- Any leafy greens such as spinach, arugula, or romaine lettuce can be used.
- Add some protein like grilled chicken or turkey to make the salad more filling.
- Sprinkle in some sliced almonds, walnuts, or sunflower seeds for added crunch and nutrition.
Step-by-Step Instructions
This section includes step-by-step photos and instructions to guide you through the recipe. For the complete printable version, scroll down to the recipe card below.

Step 1: Start by placing a bed of salad mix at the bottom of your mason jar. This acts as a barrier, keeping the dressing from making the rest of the ingredients soggy.

Step 2: Add sliced strawberries on top of the salad mix. Check out the substitution section of this post for a few other ideas!
Kitchen Tool Spotlight
Store the dressing away from the greens to keep them fresh. Place the dressing either on the bottom with strawberries as the next layer or in a separate container.
Try using a Stainless Steel Divider Cup Lid that you can use in place of a traditional lid to store the dressing. It helps to keep the wet dressing away from the dry lettuce greens.

Step 3: Add a layer of feta cheese on top of the strawberries. Any other white cheese will work as well to give you the red-white-blue effect.

Step 4: Layer in the blueberries. See the red-white-blue theme??
How to Create a Layered Picnic-in-a-Jar Recipe
To highlight the patriotic colors, layer the fruit and cheese around the edges of the jar first.
It's a simple trick that makes this layered picnic-in-a-jar recipe look even more festive.

Step 5: Then top with more salad mix. If you're not eating this right away, you can add the lid and band on top and store in the refrigerator for up to 3-5 days.
Insider Tips from My Kitchen to Yours
✔️ DO arrange the strawberries, feta, and blueberries around the sides of the jar before adding the greens to create beautiful red, white, and blue layers.
❌ DO NOT add the dressing too early, as it can make the greens wilt and lose their fresh texture.

Storage Instructions
Refrigerate: Screw a lid on top of the Mason jar and store for up to 5 days. Once the salad is mixed up with the dressing, it's best consumed right away.
Freezer: Mason jar salads are not recommended for freezing because fresh vegetables and greens don’t thaw well — they can become soggy and lose their texture.
