How to make homemade biscuits without baking powder?
To make homemade biscuits without baking powder, you can try the following methods:
- Use self-rising flour: Self-rising flour already contains baking powder, so you don't need to add any extra. Simply mix the self-rising flour with other ingredients and bake as directed.
- Substitute with buttermilk: Buttermilk has natural acidity that can activate baking soda as a leavening agent. Replace the baking powder with ¼ teaspoon of baking soda and ½ cup of buttermilk for every teaspoon of baking powder.
- Use yogurt or sour cream: Yogurt or sour cream can provide acidity and help the biscuits rise. Replace baking powder with ¼ teaspoon of baking soda and ½ cup of yogurt or sour cream for every teaspoon of baking powder.
- Cream of tartar and baking soda: Cream of tartar is an acid that can activate baking soda. Replace baking powder with ¼ teaspoon of baking soda and ½ teaspoon of cream of tartar for every teaspoon of baking powder.
What goes good with homemade biscuits?
When it comes to serving homemade biscuits, there are plenty of delicious options to consider. They can be enjoyed with some butter, jam, sausage gravy or alongside breakfast favorites like scrambled eggs and bacon.
Biscuits can also be enjoyed as a side to chicken, soups, stews, barbecue, or with a hearty salad. I love to bake my traditional Homemade Biscuits as a side dish to soup.
You can also serve them for dessert with strawberries and homemade whipped cream...yum!

How to Store Homemade Biscuits
- Allow your Valentine's Day biscuits to cool completely before storing to prevent moisture buildup and maintain their texture.
- Store in either an air-tight container or zip top bag, removing as much air as possible.
- Keep them at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
- GLASS FOOD STORAGE CONTAINERS SET: You can get a package of 10 rectangle glass containers with 2 sizes(5 pack 34oz, 5 pack 12oz). You could easily do meal prep on Sunday night and grab what you need in the morning. These glass meal prep containers are perfect for indoor, outdoor, office or picnic use.
How to Freeze Unbaked Biscuits
- Place the cut out biscuits on a baking tray that's been lined with parchment paper.
- Place the tray in the freezer for about 20 to 30 minutes.
- Once the biscuits are frozen, place them in a freezer safe bag until needed.
How to Freeze Homemade Biscuits
- Allow the baked leftover biscuits to cool completely.
- Wrap each biscuit individually with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. This will help protect them from freezer burn and keep them fresh.
- Once wrapped, place the individually wrapped biscuits in a freezer-safe bag or airtight container. Squeeze out any excess air before sealing the bag to prevent freezer burn.
- Label the bag with the date of freezing to keep track of their freshness. Place the bag in the freezer and store for up to 2-3 months.
How to Bake Frozen Homemade Biscuits
- When you're ready to enjoy the leftover biscuits, remove as many as you need from the freezer bag.
- Let them thaw at room temperature for about 30 minutes.
- Reheat in the oven at 350°F for about 5 minutes until heated through.
Top Recipe Tip
- Make sure the butter is cold!
- Be sure to use fresh baking powder for the best rise.
Why are my biscuits dense and not fluffy?
Be sure you're using cold butter since warmer butter can lead to over-mixing and gluten development, resulting in denser biscuits. Cutting the butter into small pieces or grating it while it's still cold helps distribute it evenly throughout the dough and promotes steam formation and layer creation.
You'll want to also make sure your leavening agents are fresh since old or expired baking powder can lead to dense biscuits without much rise.

Oh, yum!!! I have a recipe from Fanny Farmer that I use to make heart shaped biscuits and it's pretty close to yours. 🙂 When my kids were small, I began baking biscuits for breakfast and we'd have little sausages with them. Perfect for freezing! I need to ask my son if he ever makes them for our grandson. If not, we need to remedy this. 😀 Thanks for the recipe and I'll be sharing when Share Your Style #416 published tomorrow morning.
Happy almost Groundhog's Day,
Barb 🙂
