Recipe Notes
Ensure the dressing is added just before eating to keep the salad fresh and crisp. I suggest storing the dressing in a separate container so the lettuce doesn't wilt.
If you'd like to put the dressing in the bottom of the jar, skip the first layer of salad mix, and begin with the strawberry layer. Add all the salad mix at the top of the jar.
When you're ready to eat, gently shake the jar to mix the ingredients or pour the contents into a bowl.

What size Mason jars are best for salads?
Pint sized jars are great for individual servings. If you'd like to store a larger dinner salad, a quart sized jar will have plenty of room for the extra add ons.
Do Mason Jar Salads get Soggy?
Salads prepared in a mason jar can get soggy if not prepared correctly. The key is to layer the ingredients in the jar strategically:
Dressing: Always put the dressing at the bottom of the jar. For this recipe, we suggest not adding the dressing to the bottom of the jar to keep the red-white-blue theme.
Hard veggies: Next, add sturdy vegetables like carrots, cucumbers, and peppers. These can withstand being in contact with the dressing.
Proteins and grains: Follow with proteins like chicken, beans, or tofu, and grains like quinoa or rice.
Soft veggies and cheese: Add softer vegetables like tomatoes and avocado, as well as cheese, towards the top.
Greens: Finally, top it off with your greens like lettuce, spinach, or kale.

📋Ingredients
This is an overview of the ingredients and instructions. Be sure to see the recipe card below for exact quantities, detailed instructions and special notes.
Substitutions and Variations
Substitute the strawberries with raspberries or sliced red apples for a different red element.
If blueberries are not available, use blackberries or purple grapes. Swap the feta cheese out with goat cheese or mozzarella for a different flavor.
Any leafy greens such as spinach, arugula, or romaine lettuce can be used.
Add some protein like grilled chicken or turkey to make the salad more filling.
Sprinkle in some sliced almonds, walnuts, or sunflower seeds for added crunch and nutrition.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Start by placing a bed of salad mix at the bottom of your mason jar. This acts as a barrier, keeping the dressing from making the rest of the ingredients soggy.
Step 2: Add sliced strawberries on top of the salad mix. Check out the substitution section of this post for a few other ideas!
Step 3: Add a layer of feta cheese on top of the strawberries. Any other white cheese will work as well to give you the red-white-blue effect.
Step 4: Layer in the blueberries.
Quick Tip
Layer the fruit and cheese around the edges of the jar first so you can see distinct red, white, and blue layers.
Step 5: Then top with more salad mix.

What to Serve with Salads
Serve the salad with Poppy Seed Dressing, Homemade Ranch Dressing, or Homemade Italian Dressing.
This salad would be a great accompaniment to Grilled Barbecue Chicken Legs and Thighs or my Grilled Chicken Kabobs with Vegetables.
Storage Instructions
Refrigerate: Screw a lid on top of the Mason jar and store for up to 5 days. Once the salad is mixed up with the dressing, it's best consumed right away.
Top Recipe Tip
Store the dressing away from the greens to keep them fresh. Place the dressing either on the bottom with strawberries as the next layer or in a separate container.
Try using a Stainless Steel Divider Cup Lid that you can use in place of a traditional lid to store the dressing. It helps to keep the wet dressing away from the dry lettuce greens.
