How to make box red velvet cake taste homemade
Making box red velvet cake taste homemade is apretty easy! Start by substituting the oil for melted butter to add a layer of creamy flavor.
Then, be sure to use buttermilk instead of regular milk so that your cake is soft, moist, and packed with tangy richness. You can also add an extra egg to the cake batter.
Finally, after baking the cake according to package directions, you can easily finish things off by using a homemade cream cheese frosting recipe instead of using a store-bought canned option.

Step 5: How to Frost the Cookies
- Once the red velvet sandwich cookies are cooked and cooled, pipe the frosting onto one cookie and top with another cookie.
- Make sure you flip the cookies over so you have a flat surface on both sides of the icing.
- If you don't want to pipe the frosting on, you can use a knife or an off-set spatula to spread the frosting.

Storage Tips
- To store any leftover red velvet sandwich cookies and make sure they stay moist, store them in an air tight container.
- You can stack them on top of each other, just make sure you use either waxed or parchment paper in between the layers so they don't stick together.
- Since these are made with homemade cream cheese frosting, store the container in the refrigerator.
Top Tip
Make sure the cream cheese is at room temperature when you start preparing the cream cheese frosting.
