Can you Freeze Homemade Waffles?
I love making a double batch of waffles so that we have leftovers. This was especially helpful back when our kids were little. It made busy school mornings easier because we could just pop a frozen waffle into the toaster oven and serve it up for a quick breakfast.
Freezing waffles is a hassle-free way to have breakfast ready in just a few minutes. It's a super convenient way to serve your family a hot breakfast without any effort or hassle.

Main Ingredients Needed
This is an overview of the ingredients and instructions. Be sure to see the recipe card below for exact quantities, detailed instructions and special notes.
Step-by-Step Directions
- Step 1: In a large bowl, beat the eggs with the melted butter and milk using either a hand beater, mixer or whisk until fluffy.
- Step 2: Add in the flour mixture. Beat until just smooth being careful not to over-mix the batter.
- Step 3: Preheat the waffle iron. Spray the preheated waffle iron with non-stick baking spray.
- Step 4: Pour the batter onto the hot waffle iron, close the iron and bake according to the manufacturer's directions or until the waffles are golden brown.
- Step 5: Remove the waffles and place on a baking rack until you're ready to serve.
- Waffles are best served within a few minutes of removing from the waffle iron.
➡️How to keep waffles warm before serving
If you need to wait a little while before serving the waffles, you can keep them warm by following these easy steps:
- Preheat the oven to 200°F while you’re making the waffles.
- As you remove the waffles from the waffle maker, place them on top of a baking rack that’s been placed over a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- You can keep them warm in the oven for up to 20 minutes or so before serving.
❄️How to Freeze Homemade Waffles
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Lay the uneaten waffles on top of the parchment paper in a single layer with a little space in between each waffle.
- Place the baking sheet in the freezer for about 45 minutes or until the waffles are frozen solid.
- Remove the waffles from the baking sheet and place inside a freezer safe plastic bag.
- Label the bags with the date and place in the freezer for up to three months.
Thawing and Reheating Tips
- Preheat the oven to 350F.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place a wire baking rack on top.
- Remove the desired number of waffles from the freezer and place the waffles on top of the baking rack that’s been lightly sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. You can lay the waffles directly on the baking sheet, but placing them on top of a baking rack helps the heat from the oven circulate around the waffles making sure they crisp up evenly.
- Place in the oven for about 10 to 15 minutes or until the waffles are hot and crispy.
- Serve with butter and warm syrup.

I love buttermilk waffles. I use the Farberware iron. What tip can you use to make sure the waffles are still soft intender inside but still be crispy on the outside?
Lois says
Try keeping them warm in the oven while the rest of the batter is cooking. Set the oven to a low temp like 250°F That should help crisp up the edges for you! Thank you for visiting.

Thank you for adding the "how to freeze the waffles". I always end up making a double batch and try to freeze them but it doesn't work. I am definitely going to try putting them in the freezer in a single layer before storing them in the freezer.

I hope it works for you! It's so much easier and less expensive than purchasing waffles. Enjoy!
