Substitutions and Variations
- If you didn't want to make the homemade ganache, you can use a can of chocolate frosting.
- You could also add chopped walnuts or pecans to the either the cake mix or on top of the chocolate ganache.
- If you're a fan of coconut, add coconut to the ganache as well!
Please note: This recipe uses TWO cake mixes. Do not follow any of the directions on the back of the boxes and only add the ingredients I have listed below in the recipe card.

Step 1: Add all the cake ingredients to a large bowl and mix for a few minutes with a stand or hand mixer. Pour the batter into a greased bundt pan and bake for 50–55 minutes.
What Size Cake Pan to Use?
For this recipe, I used a 10-inch, 10 cup capacity bundt pan. I've also used a 12 inch, 12 cup capacity bundt cake pan. Make sure you check out the link below in the Helpful Kitchen Tools section.
Step 2: Check the cake around 45 minutes by inserting a toothpick or skewer—if it comes out clean or with a few crumbs, it's done. Let the cake cool in the pan for 5 minutes, loosen the edges with a knife, then turn it out onto a rack and cool completely before glazing.
Prepare the Homemade Chocolate Glaze
Step 3: Heat heavy cream in a microwave-safe bowl for about 2 minutes, just until it begins to boil, then add chocolate morsels and let sit for 5 minutes. Whisk until smooth and shiny—at first it may look separated, but keep stirring and it will come together.
Step 4: Pour the glaze over the cooled cake, letting it drip down the sides. Since it's very rich, you may want to save some—it's perfect over ice cream later.

Ignore the Box Instructions: Do not follow any of the instructions on either the cake mix box or the brownie mix box.

Freezer: You can freeze the cake for up to one month. First wrap the cake tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and place it in an airtight freezer bag before placing it in the freezer.

Method
- Heat oven to 350 degrees.
- Add the ingredients for the cake in a large bowl and using either a stand mixer or hand mixer, and mix until everything is combined.
- Pour batter into prepared bundt pan that's been sprayed with non-stick baking spray and bake for 50-55 minutes.
- When done baking, remove cake and allow to cool in pan for up to five minutes.
- Run a knife along the edges of the cake pan to help release the cake and then carefully turn the cake out onto a cooling rack.
- Cool for 30 minutes more.
- Place heavy whipping cream in a microwave safe bowl and heat on high for two minutes or just until the heavy cream begins to boil.
- Remove the bowl from the microwave and carefully add the chocolate morsels.
- The mixture may bubble up, this is okay!
- Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes and then begin to whisk until shiny and smooth, about 1 minute.
- At first it may look like the glaze is not going to get smooth. But keep stirring and it will come together.
- Pour over cooled cake and allow the glaze to drizzle down the sides of the cake.
- You can serve it right away or allow the glaze to cool.

I tried this recipe and used a heart shape bunt pan - what a disater the batter overflowed all over my oven so bad that I had to shut the oven off to stop the dripping batter which was burning in the bottom of the oven - before my smoke alarm went off - please advise on the exact size of the correct bunt pan - this is a very large amount of liquid and ultimately batter

I did a little research online this morning and most heart shaped bundt cake pans I found are 8 inches, which is clearly much smaller than the one I have linked to.

My Nordic Ware heart shape pan is a 10 cup capacity.
Most pans will have printed on bottom of pan on how much batter it will hold. Always best to check first Before pouring in your batter.

Yes, but don't overfill the pan. (You may have extra batter.) Be sure to leave about 1/2″ to 1/4″ of space at the top to give the cake room to grow. You'll also need to adjust your baking time.

Oh, I'm so sorry that happened! I did a little research online and found a few things: Sometimes depending on the type or brand of chocolate you use can cause this. I usually use either Hershey or Nestle semi-sweet chocolate chips. You can try to stir in more chocolate chips if you're finding the ganache is turning out too thin. Do you think maybe you overheated the cream in the microwave? Every microwave is different and you may not need to heat it as long as I did. Watch the heavy cream while it's in the microwave and just when you start to see the little bubbles start to form, you need to remove it and continue with the recipe. Please let me know if these suggestions help!

I made this cake some time ago and it came out great. This time it’s running over the pan. I did use 4 extra large eggs bc I didn’t have large. Could that have anything to do with running over? I used the same Bundt pan.

Lesson learned & oh how I despise wasting ingredients & my time.
Oddly enough not one other reviewers had the same issue with overflow????
If there is a next time, I will use a regular bundt plus my 6 cup bundt..

I made 2 9" rounds and frosted with chocolate buttercream... everyone complimented me and loved it but I felt it was too dry. They were definitely overbaked. I tested with toothpicks at 30 min. but they were still very wet, but at 35 they were very dry! I was so bummed and surprised at how quickly it happened.
If I try it again I'll definitely bake for less time.
