What Spices are in Allspice?
Allspice is made from one ingredient, not a blend, and comes from the dried berries of the Pimenta dioica plant. The name refers to its flavor, which tastes like a combination of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.
What does Allspice Taste Like?
- Warm, aromatic flavor that blends notes of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg
- Slightly sweet with a gentle peppery finish that is not overpowering
- Commonly used in both sweet recipes like cakes and pies and savory dishes such as stews, marinades, and spice rubs
- Also known as Jamaican pepper and popular in Caribbean and Middle Eastern cooking
- Adds depth and richness while enhancing other spices rather than overpowering them

Insider Tips from My Kitchen to Yours
✔️ DO double, triple, or scale the recipe as needed, and mix the spices thoroughly so the blend is evenly combined with no unmixed pockets.
❌ DO NOT use whole spices unless you grind them very finely, as coarse pieces will not blend evenly or measure accurately in recipes.
Storage Tips
- Once you have the homemade seasoning mix combined, add it to a mason jar. You could also use an airtight container.
- Then place the jar in a cool, dry place. This homemade seasoning mix will last up to 6 months if properly stored.

That is a great tip! You are so right, so many times, especially around the holidays I need an odd spice that is a teeny tiny container and costs more than a car wash! I've gotten so I check the Internet for a homemade version before I buy them!
