Valentine's Day Cookie Ideas
This recipe was inspired by another one of my easy cookie recipes that I to bake for holidays.
All you need to do is change the color of the candies you purchase for the holiday you're celebrating.
I even used red and blue candies for my 4th of July Cookie Cake. All the recipes use the same basic recipe. I just change the color candies used to fit the holiday.
How to Shape Chocolate Chip Cookies
There are a few ways you can shape chocolate chip cookies:
- Use two tablespoons and "drop" the cookies on the baking tray using one spoon to hold the dough and the other to push it off onto the tray.
- I like to use cookie scoops. They come in different sizes and it's fun to make a variety of sizes when baking a large batch of cookies.
- You can also bake the dough as one large cookie in a skillet like I did with my Chocolate Chip Skillet Cookie recipe.
- Another fun way is to use cookie cutters and cut out shapes after you've baked the cookie dough in a 9X13 baking pan.

Use a cookie scoop to form the dough balls to ensure they are evenly sized for uniform cooking.

How to make Heart Shaped Chocolate Chip Cookies
This would be such a cute idea for Valentine's Day. Simple press the cookie dough into a 9X13 pan. Make sure you line the pan with parchment paper so it's easy to lift the whole baked cookie out of the pan.
Then use heart shaped cookie cutters and cut out the heart shapes. You can follow these simple directions in my Heart Shaped Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars post and recipe.

Recipe Variations and Substitutions
- Add chopped nuts.
- Drizzle the cookies with melted chocolate or dip half of the cookie in melted chocolate.
- Use all white chocolate chips.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Whisk the flour, salt, and baking soda together in a medium bowl. In a larger bowl, cream the butter, sugars, and vanilla until light and fluffy. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
Step 2: Use a spatula to gently fold in the chocolate chips and M&Ms. Stirring with an electric mixer could break the candy shells, so it's important to be gentle!
Chill the Dough
Step 3: Chilling the dough is key to getting perfectly shaped cookies. By chilling the dough for at least 30 minutes, you solidify the butter, which prevents the cookies from spreading too thin in the oven. You can chill the dough in the mixing bowl or scoop it onto the baking sheet before chilling.
How to Shape Chocolate Chip Cookies
Step 4: Using a cookie scoop, add the dough onto baking sheets lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
Baking Instructions
Step 5: Bake in a preheated 375 degree oven for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.

Cookie Baking Tips
- Make sure the ingredients you’re using are fresh. If you don’t bake often, you might want to purchase a new box of baking soda or baking powder before you start a new recipe.
- Don’t over-mix the dough.
- Watch the cookies as they bake. Baking time for most recipes is a “guideline” but you know your oven better than me. Watch them closely as they bake so you don’t overcook them. Cookies are done when the edges are set and lightly browned.
- Remember, cookie centers will continue to cook for a few minutes while they’re out of the oven and cooling.
- Let the cookies cool completely before storing in airtight containers.
Storing and Freezing Tips
Pantry: Allow the cookies to cool completely to room temperature before storing in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week. I always layer cookies between waxed paper or parchment paper so there's no sticking.
Freeze Baked Cookies: Freeze already baked cookies by allowing them to fully cool before adding to a freezer safe container with pieces of wax paper or parchment paper in between the layers of cookies. Freeze for up to 3 months.
Freeze Raw Cookie Dough Balls: Prepare the recipe as directed, then scoop the dough onto a baking sheet and freeze for 30 minutes. Transfer the frozen dough balls to a freezer bag for longer storage. (For more freezing tips, check out my Freezing Cookie Dough post!) Freeze for up to 3 months.
How to Bake Frozen Cookie Dough
- Remove the cookies from the freezer.
- Place on a baking tray that's been lined with parchment paper.
- If you're baking slice-and-bake cookies, you may need to wait a little while for the dough cylinder to defrost and soften a bit before slicing.
- Bake the cookies according to the directions on the original recipe.
- Enjoy with a tall glass of ice-cold milk.
