What bread do you use for French toast?
This is the first time I'm using a cinnamon/raisin bread to create homemade French toast. I usually find myself reaching for the classic sliced white bread, like I do with my Freezer French Toast Recipe.
When it comes to French toast, there is nothing better than the perfect bread. While some people swear by Texas toast, others prefer a thicker cut of sandwich bread for an extra denseness when eating.
It also works with whatever toppings you're in the mood for- from butter and syrup, to apples and caramel. Try my Texas Toast French Toast Casserole.
Another favorite I also like using thick slices of challah, which is slightly less sweet than brioche - it adds a nice contrast when you add some sugar to your batter. I use this bread for my Overnight French Toast Casserole.
No matter what type of bread you use for your French toast, you can be sure of one thing- it's always going to be delicious!
How to make icing for French toast?
For a delicious twist on this classic breakfast staple, try adding a few extra touches and make an easy powdered sugar icing to drizzle over the top of the slices right before serving.
Making your own homemade powdered sugar icing is easy and only requires two ingredients. All you need is some powdered sugar and heavy cream. Start by combining 2 cups of powdered sugar into a bowl and gradually adding ¼ cup of heavy cream while stirring.
You can also use homemade cream cheese frosting for a more decadent breakfast! Depending on how thick you'd like it, you can add more or less cream until it reaches the desired consistency.

- Cinnamon Swirl Bread - I used Pepperidge Farm Cinnamon Swirl Bread for this recipe, but any other brand will do. You could also use plain white bread or even a cinnamon raisin bread would be delicious.
- Eggs
- Milk
- Maple syrup
- Cinnamon sugar mixture - either homemade or store-bought.
- Powdered sugar
- Vanilla
📌Baking Tip: You can easily make homemade cinnamon sugar by combining ½ cup sugar with 2 tablespoons cinnamon.
Step-by-Step Directions
- Step 1: Combine the eggs, milk, maple syrup and cinnamon/sugar mixture in a large casserole dish.
- Step 2: Add the cinnamon bread slices and coat each one on both sides.
Cooking Instructions
- Step 3: Cook the bread slices on a lightly greased electric skillet on medium heat until browned on one side.
- Step 4: You can also use a traditional skillet on top of the stove if you prefer.
- Step 5: After a few minutes, flip each slice of bread and continue cooking until both sides are golden brown.
Make the Cinnamon Roll Glaze
This is the same glaze used for my Easy Cinnamon Roll Bread. It comes together really quick:
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- ¼ teaspoon vanilla
- 1 tablespoon milk
- Step 6: Combine the ingredients for the glaze in a small bowl and immediately pour over the Cinnamon Roll French Toast slices.

Serving Tips
- Serve the French toast immediately adding the powdered sugar glaze right before you sit down to eat.
- You could also add a little butter and, of course, syrup.
- We like our syrup warmed in the microwave for a few minutes.
- Another delicious way is to serve either Homemade Strawberry Sauce or Homemade Blueberry Sauce in place of the powdered sugar glaze.
Substitutions and Variations
- If you're serving this for a holiday breakfast, you can sprinkle some fun Christmas sprinkles on top and around the plate.
- Try using cinnamon/raisin bread!
Freezing Tips
- Lay any leftover French Toast in a single layer on a baking sheet that's been covered in either waxed paper, parchment paper or even aluminum foil.
- Next, place the tray in the freezer.
- Leave the tray in the freezer for about 30 to 40 minutes.
- Remove the FROZEN French Toast slices and place in a freezer safe container or bag.
It helps to work fast when cooking French toast. Have everything ready to go before you start dipping the bread in the egg mixture. Also, I have found that removing the bread slices from the plastic bag and placing them on a cutting board for about 30 minutes before cooking helps to "dry" it out and remove any excess moisture from the bread slices.
It helps if you use bread that is a little stale. Then submerge the slices of bread into the egg mixture quickly. Make sure the bread doesn't sit too long in the egg mixture either. I like to quickly turn the bread over a few times in the egg mixture using a fork making sure both sides are equally coated.
