💭How do you make a box mix taste like a bakery cake?
To make a boxed cake mix taste like you're serving a cake purchased from a bakery or even a homemade recipe, swap out the oil for real butter.
If you're making a chocolate cake mix, try swapping out the water with coffee. Chocolate combined with coffee really brings a deeper flavor to the cake.

🥣Instructions
Step 1 | Combine the Ingredients
- Use the directions on the back of the cake mix box to prepare the cake.
- Pour the batter into an egg shaped pan that's been prepared with baking spray.

📌Quick Tip: Don't have an egg shaped pan? Bake in a 9x13 pan and use a template made of parchment paper to cut out the egg shape. Make sure the cake is completely cooled before cutting.

Step 2 | Prepare the Frosting
- Divide the frosting into 3 separate bowls.
- Add food coloring to each bowl a little at a time until you achieve the desired colors.
- Fill the piping bags fitted with star tips no more than ⅔ full.

Step 3 | Decorate the Cake
- Before decorating, make sure the cake is completely cooled.
- Twist the top of the piping bag to help hold the frosting in while piping. You can also use a rubber band or piping bag tie to help keep it closed. While holding the piping bag in the palm of your hand, squeeze to release the frosting.

💭Storage Tips
- Store in a cake keeper or cake box and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
💭Freezing Tips
- To freeze the decorated cake, place the cake in the freezer for about an hour to firm up the frosting. Once the frosting is firm, wrap the cake in plastic wrap then wrap in aluminum foil.
- To defrost, remove the aluminum and plastic wrap so as to not mess up the frosting once it has defrosted.
- Place in the fridge overnight for it to thaw. Set on the counter about an hour before serving to come to room temperature.
💭Top Recipe Tip
- Transfer the cooled cake to the serving platter before you start decorating.
