📌Tips for Melting Chocolate Candy Melts
- It's best to melt chocolate low and slow. I always use the microwave and start in 30 second intervals. Stir often to make sure part of the chocolate isn't overheating.
- If it is raining or you are in a moisture filled area the cookies will take longer to set.
- Avoid putting cookie pops in the refrigerator to set. You could place them in front of a fan to help aid in the drying and hardening process.
- If the chocolate is too thick to dip, add 1 tablespoon of coconut, olive or vegetable oil and stir until smooth.
Step-by-Step Directions
- Step 1: Place the candy melts in microwave-safe bowls. Then place the bowls in the microwave and begin melting the chocolate in 30 second intervals making sure you stir the chocolate after every 30 seconds to make sure the chocolate heats evenly.
- Step 2: Dip the tip of the straw into the white candy melts then immediately into the center of the cream filling of the Oreo cookie.
- Step 3: Smooth out the chocolate around the stick with your finger.
- Step 4: Place on parchment lined baking sheet to set for a minimum of five minutes.
Dip the Cookies in Melted Chocolate
- Step 5: Melt the red and blue candy melts according to package instructions.
- Step 6: Dip a few of the Oreos into the colored red and blue melted chocolates. Gently shake off any excess and scrape the excess chocolate off the backside of the Oreo pop against the side of the bowl.
- Step 7: Place the Oreo pops into the parchment lined baking sheets.
Decorating the Patriotic Treats
- Step 8: Now, let's make these Oreo Cookies look like patriotic treats! Place the cookies on a parchment lined baking sheet. Immediately add the patriotic sprinkles while the cookies are still wet.
- Step 9: If you wait too long, the sprinkles will not stick. You can either let the cookies harden at room temperature for about 20 to 30 minutes.
Patriotic Table Centerpieces
Here is a few easy tips to use the chocolate covered Oreo cookies as patriotic table centerpieces:
- Purchase florist's foam and place into a pretty container or metal bucket.
- Insert the pops into the foam, fanning them out to create a cute design shape.
- You can cover the florist's foam with either decorative patriotic wrapping paper or colored paper straw.

FREQUENTLY ASKED RECIPE QUESTIONS
You definitely should refrigerate these Patriotic Chocolate Covered Oreos. Store them in an air-tight container in the refrigerator. You can keep them at room temperature the day you want to serve them. You should not freeze them as the cold temperature from the freezer can change the way the chocolate looks when you defrost them.
I always use the microwave method to melt chocolate for dipping. But you can also use a double boiler to melt the chocolate.
