Puff Pastry Hearts
These puff hearts are rich in flavor, soft and almost melt in your mouth! But before we can put the dessert together, we need to start with defrosting puff pastry sheets.
You can fill them with pudding, mouse, flavored homemade whipped cream, homemade ice cream or even a savory filling like chicken pot pie mixture.
How to Defrost Puff Pastry
- Only defrost what you're going to use. If a recipe only calls for one sheet, wrap unused sheets in plastic wrap, place in a freezer safe plastic bag and return to the freezer.
- Thaw the dough in the refrigerator 3 to 4 hours before you need to use it. If you forget to remove the pastry from the freezer in time for your recipe, you can defrost it at room temperature for about 30 to 40 minutes.
- Keep the puff pastry dough cool and try to work quickly. If you find that the pastry gets too soft while working with it, return it to the refrigerator for it to firm up. Even placing the puff pastry in the freezer for a few minutes will help firm it up again.
- You should use any thawed dough within 24 hours.
How to Defrost Puff Pastry Quickly
- The quickest way to defrost puff pastry quickly is to simply put the sheet on top of the counter.
- Remove the puff pastry from the paper wrapping and cover in plastic wrap.
- Place on a plate and watch closely. You do not want it to get too soft too quickly.
- Once it gets soft enough to start unfolding you should be able to roll it out and use in the recipe.

- Frozen Puff Pastry; thawed
- 1 package JELL-O Chocolate Flavor Instant Pudding; 3.9 ounce size
- Container of Cool Whip
- Cold milk
🥣Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Pudding
- In a large bowl, whisk together the pudding mix and the milk.
- Gently fold in the container of Cool Whip and place in the refrigerator while you prepare the puff pastry hearts.
Step 2: How to use Puff Pastry
- I like to use parchment baking sheets, but a lightly floured surface works well too. Unroll the pastry and lay flat.
- You may need to use your rolling pin to flatten out the pastry and remove the fold lines, however, you don't want to press too hard or the pastry won't puff up as nicely.
Step 3: How to Cut out the Heart Shapes
- Using a heart shaped cookie cutter, cut out shapes and place on a baking sheet that is lined with parchment paper.
- You can see I used two different sized cookie cutters.
Step 4: How to Bake Pastry Hearts
- Bake in a preheated 400 degrees for about 8 to 10 minutes.
- Keep your eye on them as they bake. Because oven temperatures vary, yours could be ready much quicker and you don't want them to get too brown.
- When the pastry is high and golden brown, it is done.
- Let the puff pastry hearts cool completely on a baking rack before filling with the pudding mixture.
Step 5: How to Put the Dessert Together
- Cut each heart in half and lay the bottom half on your plate, add a spoonful of the pudding mixture and cover with the top of the heart.
- Sprinkle with powdered sugar or powdered cocoa powder before serving.
- You can also add whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate syrup on top if you like. The smaller heart-shaped puff pastry were served on the side as a little treat.
